How much does a cruise really cost?

Cruises around the world are competing for your dollar. They are lowering prices and incentivizing riding, with member deals and deep discounts. The three biggest facts on the cost are the cruise line, cabin choice, and the travel destination.

Cruise industry experts carefully weighed in on the overall costs, per passenger. According to CruiseMarketWatch.com, the average passenger spent more than $200 a day. This includes ticket cost as well as on board spending.

How much it costs can be as individual as each person’s cruise experience.  Advertised prices rarely accurately reflect the total amount spent. Factor in costs such as food, drink, excursions as well as shopping or even gambling. The location of the cruise will also impact the dollar amount spent.

The upfront cost will cover meals and free onboard entertainment. While many ships can certainly impress passengers with the free amenities, others have more of a reputation for nickel and dining everyone onboard.

Cruises have luxury services, such as spas and massages, that can carry a $100+ ticket price. There are also things such as onboard photos and videos that will cost extra.

So, for a line such as Caribbean, an estimate of the total cost is between $1500-$2000 per person.

Additional costs and fees

On the cruise website, there may be additional costs on top of the quoted cost. There may be taxes, fees, and port costs to keep in consideration. You can estimate these to be about $100-$200 per person.

Also, tipping is encouraged for all of the hard working crew members making a living onboard. Generally, tipping half for a child under 12 is acceptable. The standard for a gratuity on a cruise is 15%.

There are also daily charges for your stateroom attendant. The cost of the porter, or person who carries your bags, is not included. Tipping $1 or $2 per bag carried is a nice gesture.

While you may be accustomed to internet access at home and virtually everywhere on land, on the ship it has an extra fee.

Excursions can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to more than a thousand dollars per person. While taking excursions is not required, and you can explore the destination solo, some people like the group atmosphere and getting to be guided on the tour.

Flight costs should also be taken into consideration when adding up the cost of your cruise. From the airport, the transportation should also be kept in mind. You may pay anywhere from $20 to $100 per person.

How much is a cruise for one person?

Cruise lines, notably Norwegian cruises, offer single person cabins. Some require another person surcharge on top of the cost of the one person, to make up for the revenue that the cruise line is not getting.

So, for one person, depending on the other factors included, it could be between $909-$3500 per person for a seven day cruise.

On top of the cruise ticket cost, a passenger may spend up to $1000 dollars in additional expenses.
